All-Around Better Coverage For Less
What is Pet Insurance?
Generally there are three types of pet insurance plans
Why Pet Insurance?
One emergency visit can often pay the premiums for most of, all of, or more than the life of the pet; plus with pet insurance you could go to the vet more regularly and better their health and increase the amount of time they have with you.
How many pets do you have? How active or inactive are they? How vulnerable is their environment? Do others in the house leave out toys, food, or other things?Other outside animals in the area? ...all valid questions and more to ask yourself.
Life come with the uncertainties and even though your animal may not be able to speak to you, we love our pets and providing pet insurance, like other care and maintenance plans, gives us the opportunity to do what's needed, what's right, and minimize the financial burden of doing so.
If you still need to take a closer look, call your local vet, the situation may not be "Do I get pet insurance?" but more "Which pet insurance is best for my pet?"
Pet insurance policies all vary due to policy type and level of coverage you choose. Most pet insurance plans pay towards
- exam fees,
- emergency care,
- unexpected injuries/accidents,
- unexpected illnesses,
- surgery,
- medication,
- tests,
- and more!
How much does Pet Insurance cost?
There are generally 3 types of plans and cost will vary based on the plan that you choose; accident only, accident and illness, and preventative care plans.
Generally speaking, most pet owners will only spend $10 to $50 per month based on what they choose. Some owners based on age, size, the state you live in, and a few other differences can expect to pay up to $100 to $125 per month.
The cost of one emergency visit out of pocket often could be near the the same as premiums for a pets entire life. The common understanding is that if your pet's premiums are higher, than you can expect that pet to have more issues with health or day-to-day uncertainties that could cause more visits.
Most policies are reimbursement plans and allow you to use any vet.
No real surprises to what is not covered which is why it's important to do it early or right when it's presented to you. Here are the most common exclusions:
Pre-existing conditions. Illnesses, injuries and similar situations that were there before you covered your pet. Good new is that some pre-existing conditions are not always permanently excluded.
Grooming. Baths, nail trims, fur cuts, and other similar services. These would be considered hygeine, cosmetic, maintenance or all three and are not covered.
Experimental treatment. Common standard of care have been established and can vary state to state. Treatments considered experimental by the veterinary medical board of your state are not covered.
Food and nutritional needs. - Although there are prescription foods that exisit do not expect the dietary expenses to be covered by pet insurance.
Non veterinary / Admin expenses. Licenses, certifications, records, disposal services, over the counter purchases, regulations, rules and similar needs or services are not included in you pet insurance plans.
